Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In San Francisco, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across California run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.

Hours are published for 6 days a week. On most of those days it is open 5–9:30 pm. It is closed on Monday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (415) 655-9623. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone.

On Google it holds a rating of 4.4 out of 5 from 396 reviews, which is a strong result for a japanese in San Francisco and suggests consistent service.

San Francisco is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around San Francisco is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

Pineapple beer or grapefruit beer- must have. It’s refreshing. Seared toro sushi- great flavour. Recommend Mozuku shot- too sour. I’ve had this in Okinawa before and it wasn’t like this- skip. Pork cheek skewer- flavourful. A little fatty but it’s good. Chicken gizzard- our favourite Chicken heart- not our favourite. Skip. It was a bit mushier than we expected. Hand rolls (Toro, miso trio) - both good. Side note- their wasabi is delicious. Get it on the side and add to whatever you like to add a kick.

Rating is closer to 3.8, but I debated giving it a 4 stars because of a few reasons: food enjoyment and price affordability. First, I experienced impeccable service. Shoutout to the lady who worked all of front-of-house, she is a boss. She was our hostess, server, ran food, and bused tables. All the while, checking in on us often and letting us know when things were on the way so we didn’t feel forgotten. Food is all small plate shareables. Our one entree was the pork cheek fried rice. Maybe it was just what we ordered but I felt like everything was really oily/greasy. The freshest items were the negitoro roll and the potato salad they gave to us at the start for free. Yes, it’s an izakaya, but we found ourselves struggling to continue eating the plates since it felt so heavy. Sure, maybe we didn’t order the right stuff, but lots of the menu items are deep fried, stir-fried, or grilled also. We enjoyed the cumin lamb skewers and the negitoro the best! We were disappointed in the truffle poppers as each bite was more filled with fried breading than mushrooms. The dessert was beautiful and we did enjoy that. We ended up paying like 100pp including tax and tip. There are many Japan

This place is super overpriced/hyped for what it is imo. I've now been here for both happy hour and regular dinner and everything has been resoundingly "okay," even the dishes that sound exciting. Would not come back, sad that it's so close lol.

Cozy and delicious experience of small plates and sake. Expect a slight wait. Everything we had was perfectly executed- loved the noodle bowl. For me, a must-visit.

Mediocre food, but everything else was nice. Walked into a very cozy atmosphere, a bit chilly so we got a hot tea which was nice. As for food, Chutoro crispy rice sizzle thing: nice but rice and sweet sauce flavor are overpowering. The chutoro had a big tendon running through the middle making it hard to chew Oysters: very good! Sweet and umami, clean oysters. Maybe a tad too sweet Ocean chawanmushi "creme brulee" with crab and uni: this was was the most disappointing. Quite a small amount of egg, also tasted completely unseasoned. There was caramelized brown sugar just like creme brulee which was too much and I tried to remove, but couldn't. Duck skewers: pretty good Oxtail omurice: very underseasoned for me. Kind of heavy. Pretty good with some salt but not amazing. Overall was disappointed by the food, especially the ocean chawanmushi creme brulee. Everything else was good
